About AGP

National Heritage Database

What is the National Heritage Database?

NHDB content is collected by volunteers, often in conjunction with research being performed for a County Heritage Guide. TheNHDB is our "people's database of American heritage," including data about famous and obscure natural and historic heritage sites all across the USA! It is not limited to "officially designated" sites, such as the National Register of Historic Places or state  & local landmarks. Sources may be books and other reference sources, including personal interviews with local residents, etc.

Each NHDB site record will contain, at a minimum, the Asset ID, Name, Description, GPS coordinates and/or Address, and the Data Source (references). Additional data, such as Category, Year built or destroyed, Ownership, Endangered Status, etc. will be included when possible. The NHDB is a dynamic information resource - its contents and structure may change on a daily basis.

Use of, and/or duplication of the NHDB is governed by our copyright and software licensing agreements.

How can I get a copy?

It's not yet in publication. When the 1st Edition is released in 2009, you will be able to receive it with your donation to The American Guides Project. We will deliver the NHDB on CD-ROM, in Excel 2007, Access 2003, and CSV formats.

Donation over $150 : Individuals may request a copy of the current database for personal use; after 6 months, you will also receive the next following annual update.

County Partners: Eligible to receive one site license, plus updates, for use by their patrons at the Partner's location.

Other Non-profits or government agencies: Purchase one or more single-user copies at $25 each, for on-site use by your clients/patrons/staff. If this is not sufficient, please contact the Director to discuss alternate licensing arrangements.

Business/Commercial Use: Only upon approval, and with a custom license agreement. Generally, the Project only approves such use where it substantially benefits the public, at no charge, and furthers the non-profit mission and goals of the Project, its Partners, and related Programs. How can I help develop the NHDB?

We can't accomplish this without your help!

A. Make a donation to the Project or Sponsor us.

B. Volunteer - local or national level.

C. Partner with us on a County Guide

Shortly, we will provide forms and editorial guidance for volunteers on this page. In the meantime, email us at the address above, detailing your interest.

Is the NHDB copyrighted?

Yes. The database design and presentation, and any user interfaces fall under copyright laws, and are owned exclusively by The American Guides Project. Data itself is never subject to copyright, but our license agreement restricts your use/export of our data for any purpose beyond fair/personal use.

That said, it is the intent of the Project to develop the NHDB and later contribute it to the public domain. In the meantime, we need financial support through donations and licensing to enable us to fully develop the database. Thanks for your support!
